A death investigation continued Tuesday morning in Pike County, Illinois after a woman died following a domestic dispute call.
According to the Pittsfield Police Department, officers responded to a domestic dispute call around 7:00 p.m. Monday night at 642 Clarksville Road in Pittsfield.
When officers arrived on the scene they found Sharon K. Welch unresponsive. Welch was pronounced dead less than an hour later at Illini Community Hospital.
Officers arrested 63-year-old David M. Sampley, following a preliminary investigation which included a search warrant of Sampley’s residence.
Sampley was charged with Domestic Battery and taken to the Pike County Jail, without bond. Authorities said more charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Pike County Sheriff Paul Petty said Sampley was a "known individual" to authorities.
"Here in the last six months we have responded to the residence a couple of times there," Petty said. "Obviously, we know both Mr. Sampley and Mrs. Welch, but to that degree this incident completely came in differently."
Petty said officers conducted search warrants and interview with neighbors until about 4:00 a.m. Tuesday.
An autopsy on the body of Sharon K. Welch was scheduled for Tuesday in Bloomington, Illinois. Petty said authorities hope to learn more information in a preliminary autopsy report by noon on Tuesday, but final results including toxicology would take longer.
