Drug drop box gives community way to safely get rid of medicine

Illini Community Hospital, located at 640 W Washington Street, now has medication disposal kiosk for people to drop of unwanted or expired medication.

The hospital is aiming to reduce the risk of people abusing opioids and other prescripted drugs. Along with giving people an alternative to flushing medicine down the toilet, which can contaminated the water system.

The kiosk is in the Illini Emergency Room waiting room next to the ATM and it is a free, confidential and anonymous.

Medicine is only accepted in solid form including pills, tablets and gel caps. Items not accepted are needles, liquids, lotions or creams, aerosols/inhalers and non-pharmaceutical items. Illegal or street drugs are also not accepted.
