Traffic stop leads to arrest for illegal drugs

A Hamilton, Illinois, man was arrested for possession of illegal drugs following a traffic stop Tuesday night.

Hancock County Sheriff Scott Bentzinger stated that at approximately 11:20 p.m. the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office working in conjunction with the Hancock County Multi-Agency Response Team (MRT), conducted a traffic stop of a 2012 Chrysler van on U.S. Hwy 136 west of New Warsaw Road, in Hamilton. He stated that as a result of the stop the driver of the van was arrested for driving while license suspended.

Hancock County K9 “Zaire” detected the presence of illegal drugs in the vehicle, according to Bentzinger. He stated a search of the vehicle yielded cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms, cannabis over 700 grams, THC related products over 100 grams, and prescription medication, all packaged for sale and delivery. He stated the passenger in the vehicle, Jason Sprague, 36 from Hamilton, was arrested and charged with possession of the illegal drugs.

Bentzinger stated a search of Sprague’s residence was conducted following the traffic stop, and more illegal drugs, money and a firearm were all seized as evidence. Sprague was lodged in Hancock County Jail awaiting arraignment on the charges.

Hancock County MRT consists of Law Enforcement Officers from Hamilton Police Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Hancock County Sheriff’s Reserve, and Warsaw Police.
