A warning for pet owners: local veterinarians said a virus is going around in dogs with a 50/50 chance of survival.
It’s called Parvovirus. Unvaccinated dogs, especially puppies, are susceptible to contracting the virus. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea causing extreme dehydration. Four Paws Pet Clinic Owner and Veterinarian, Patricia Crist, said she has already seen at least 15 cases this year, which is more than past years.
"We’ve had some severe cases come in," said Crist. "It seems like a couple years ago it seem like two, three, four days in hospital, now they’re seven, eight, nine, ten days in hospital. They look like they are on deaths door."
Crist said if your pet shows signs of parvo, take them to the vet immediately. She also adds until your dog is fully vaccinated for parvo, keep them from pet stores and dog parks.
