With new elementary schools opening this fall in Quincy, school board members are discussing playground safety.
To get to the playground behind Iles Elementary, you take a road around the side of the building but, nothing is keeping kids from straying into areas where cars could be. At Wednesday night’s meeting, QPS School Board members said that will change.
The issue came up at Tuesday’s building committee meeting. Now the board is considering putting up fencing or some type of barrier in order to fully enclose the playgrounds at all five of the new QPS elementary schools.
"It’s a safety factor," said Board Member Richard McNay. "During recess, a child could wander out through those gates or someone could wander in so we feel that it’s a needed addition."
McNay said right now, the board is figuring out what the fencing will cost. They hope to have it installed at the schools in the next 4 to 6 weeks.
