Hannibal’s airport may be small but with some needed improvements, officials said there could be an increase in the number of visitors who use it.
Hannibal City Council recently approved a change in the runway’s weight rating which increases it to 30,000 pounds.
Airport FBO Manager Robin Carroll said the runway can already handle that size plane.
She said that small change could make a big difference in the amount of traffic they see at the airport but Carroll said if they really want to see the airport grow, they still need a runway extension.
"The more jets you have the more people you have," explained Carroll. "The more they go to your restaurants and the more they spend money in our community. The economic development of that could be huge."
The city council also approved a project to fix and seal cracks in the runway.
Carroll said those improvements will make it more likely for pilots to want to land at the airport.
