WGEM Sports Trivia Night: A Success and a Tribute

The 11th Annual WGEM Sports Trivia Night was Saturday at QU Stadium and as usual the event was a success for those answering the questions and the charities benefiting from the event.

This year the beneficiaries were the Northeast Missouri and West Central Illinois centers for independent living who the event raised money for in honor of former WGEM Sports Center host Josh Houchins.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Josh, but it was easy to see how much he meant to this community and the inspiration he was and still is today.

NEILS executive director Brooke Kendrick said, "Josh was unique in that he never let anything, any barrier get in his way.

You know, he went to college. He got his degree despite his disability. Found a fabulous job that he absolutely loved.

And that’s like the epitome of disability and making sure that people with disabilities understand you don’t just have to stay at home.

There are still opportunities for you. He’s the example that we want everyone to kind of look up to and live by."

Broc Hampsmire, WGEM SportsCenter host and Josh’s long time friend and co-host added that, "He loved this event. This was one of his highlights of his year. The preparation that went into us and the night itself. Just joking and laughing with everybody that comes.

So I can certainly still sense that atmosphere and his presence here tonight.

An incredible evening and we can’t forget to mention that three teams walked away with hardware. Palsey Posse came in first by just a single point, Sullied Reputations finished in second and Birthright finished in 3rd. Congrats to all those teams.

?And most importantly a total of 5,035 dollars was raised tonight which will be split between the two centers.
