Fishing tournament raises money for veterans

Fishing for Freedom gets hundreds of veterans out on the Mississippi river to fish and raising funds for the weekend is a priority, that’s why a local group held an event this weekend to help.

It was an all day event on Sunday, there was a catfish tournament at the Southside Boat Club and a cornhole competition started by Them Guys Cornhole to raise funds for next years event.

"There’s a lot of charges," said Fishing for Freedom Catfish Tournament Organizer. "It’s an expensive event to put on and it gets bigger every year, so it gets more expensive every year."

Organizers said it was just a great summer day to have fun and raise money for the vets.

"We try to get more people and raise more money for our veterans," said Them Guys Cornhole Director Bryan Lynch. "I feel like they’ve really earned it. It’s a big cause and it’s excited really."

Lynch said cornhole tournament raised a total of $480 and the Fishing for Freedom organizers said the catfish event raised more than $3,000.
