New school year begins at Western Illinois University

Students have moved in and Monday was the first day of class at Western Illinois University.

The campus came to life as WIU officials welcomed more than 900 new freshman, more than 750 new transfer students and more than 550 graduate, who had the chance to get involved during welcome week.

"It’s always exciting," Associate Vice President for Student Services Jason Woods said. "The students are back and they bring the energy back with them. We have an opportunity to engage them in a variety of different ways. We’ve had welcome week activities here on campus and so we’re excited. We’re really excited that they’re back."

Woods said enrollment is down from this time last year, but didn’t give specific date on that.
