Hannibal was named a ‘Purple Heart City’ at Tuesday night’s city council meeting.
The designation is given by the state Military Order of the Purple Heart.
Hannibal’s mayor says he accepted it as soon as the group presented him the idea. He says throughout Hannibal, you can see that the city honors veterans in multiple ways.
"It’s quite an honor to be able to become a purple heart city, said Mayor James Hark. "We hold our veterans and those who have served and those who we have lost in military conflicts. We hold those people very close to our heart."
The mayor says they hope to put up signs letting those that come to Hannibal know about the distinction
