John Wood Community College is being recognized for its online Fire Science Associates Degree program.
According to OnlineAssociatedDegree.net, the program is ranked 8th in the country.
John Wood’s Emergency Services Department Chair, Tom Bentley, who’s also a fire chief at the Tri-Township Fire Department, said their program stands out for having access to hands on training and specialized courses in Fire Service Management, Incident Management for the First Responders and more. Chief Bentley said another factor is other colleges outsource their program to John Wood.
"We’ve open up our degree to where we don’t just offer it for people in our area," said Chief Bentley. "We’ve offered it all across the United States and actually all over the world. We’ve had students as far always as Okinawa, Japan graduate with us. It’s an honor for us to have been recognized."
Chief Bentley said the fire departments in the Tri-States having a two year degree in fire science is heavily weighed in their application process.
