Students honor local first responders

Tri-State students honored local first responders in honor of September 11.

More than 160 eighth graders from Macomb Junior High started Tuesday morning by picking up trash and cleaning up the landscaping at the Macomb Police Department and fire station.

The teachers who organized the event hope it helps students learn about the importance of that day.

"These kids weren’t born when 9/11 happened," Macomb Junior High Teacher Diane Meline said. "It’s kind of hard to instill some of that in them. We’ve got kids whose parents are firefighters, police officers, and whenever there’s an emergency and we’re running away, they’re running to it. So, it’s the least we can do to thank them."

This is the first year the junior high has done this but the teachers hope to make this an annual community service event.
