Special Olympics participates in bowling tournament

The bowling lanes in Quincy were packed for the Region H Special Olympics Bowling Tournament Sunday morning.

About 105 athletes participated in the tournament at Tangerine Bowl, after practicing for about eight weeks prior to the competition.

Athletes of all ages were there, hoping to take home a gold and qualify for sectionals.

This tournament included teams from Adams and Pike County.

“It’s always a pleasurable event,”Region H Director for Special Olympics Lynde Pavich said. “I feel like the athletes always have good time with lots of high fives and hugs. You can’t really be around our special needs athletes and have a bad day and not have a smile on your face, so the events are my favorite part of what I do.”

WGEM’s Alexandra Carter emceed the event and announced the opening ceremonies, where athletes sang the oath and national anthem.

The Quincy University men’s basketball team also spent their time off the court to volunteer.
