Local students celebrated National Farm to School month.
St. Francis Solanus students took a big crunch out of an apple at lunch on Thursday for the Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch.
The apples had to be locally or regionally grown and Edgewood Orchards donated
300 apples to help students learn about the importance of nutrition and agriculture.
“We’re trying to bring a lot more fresh fruits and vegetables into our lunch program,” said Tabitha Surowiec, cafeteria manager. “I thought this was a great way to show them that a place like Edgewood Orchards actually has fresh produce grown right here in our backyard.”
Schools across the state of Illinois and Midwest also participated in the 4th annual Great Apple Crunch.
