We’re learning more about the two children who died in the house fire on 611 North 8th Street in Quincy on Friday night.
QPS Superintendent Roy Webb said 8-year-old Toby Brewer and 5-year-old Emma Kramer, were third grade and kindergarten students at Rooney Elementary.
He said the district will have counselors throughout the district next week for students and staff.
Webb said this is a difficult time for the district and it wants to help the community out as much as possible.
“We’ll be praying caring for those individuals we do have additional social workers and counseling in our schools, Webb said. “So if anyone feels the need to talk to someone, we’ll have professionals on staff.”
He also said this is a difficult time for staff.
“Those kids went to Washington School last year and their relatives and friends are throughout the district. So we will keep a close eye on the kids and our staff. This is a tough thing for us to deal with over the next couple of weeks.”
He added that another child, a fourth grader, was in the home at the time of the fire, but made it out safely.
Webb said the three children had another sibling in junior high, who wasn’t at home during the fire.
We reached out to Quincy Fire Department and Quincy Police Department for updates on the investigation.
Fire officials said they are still investigating the cause of the fire and why the kids were still inside when the fire broke out.
Police said their investigation is ongoing and will not comment on the situation at this time.
Funeral arrangements for the children are with the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home.
The fire last night has tragically impacted our school and community. The two young victims were Rooney students. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the immediate Family. All will need our support through some tough days. Counseling will be available at schools on Monday.
