Woman in custody, suspected of setting motel fire

Monroe City (WGEM) — Monroe City Police Chief Tyler Wheeler has reported that a Colorado woman is in custody in connection with a Monroe City motel room fire Thursday night.

Wheeler stated that Thursday night at approximately 11 p.m., the Monroe City Police Department and the Monroe City Fire Department were called to the Bel-Air Motel for a structure fire.

Upon arrival it was discovered one of the rooms was fully engulfed with visible smoke and flames. It was determined the tenant, Shellie Clark of Arvada, Colorado, was not injured and was outside. Clark told officers she fell asleep with a candle lit and discovered her room was on fire.

Wheeler stated that officers took Clark to the office lobby area to stay warm while they investigated the scene.  While Clark was in the lobby, she apparently lit some fake plants and other items on fire with a lighter.

Officers then took Clark into custody and transported her to the Police Department.  Clark was later transported to the Randolph County Jail on a 24 hour investigative hold for Arson, stated Wheeler.

Court records show Clark was charged with Arson 1st Degree. Her bond was set at $50,000.

Clark’s first court appearance is scheduled for November 13.
