Fort Madison discussing rate change in city cemeteries

You may have to pay more to bury a loved one in southeast Iowa.

The city of Fort Madison is discussing whether to increase cemetery rates next year because of overtime costs and manpower issues.

Out of the six burials in November, four were on Saturdays.

The current proposal would raise rates between $100 and $200 dollars during the week and $400 to $500 dollars on Saturday.

Here is what it will look like:

Officials hope the rate change will create additional revenue for the city and limit weekend burials.

“The cemeteries operate at a deficit. They do not bring in enough income to cover all of the expenses,” City Clerk Melinda Blind said. “I believe we are looking at anywhere between $75,000 and $85,000 a year that the tax payers are having to make up.”

The issue was tabled at yesterday’s meeting because the mayor and two other council members were not present.

It is scheduled to be on the December 18 agenda.
