If you’re in Macomb, you may soon see solar panels in fields around town.
On Monday, Macomb city council approved an ordinance to authorize a special use permit to put two solar gardens on more than 20 acres of land along East University Drive.
Mayor Mike Inman said the land is not within city limits, but zoning is necessary because it’s located within two miles of city limits.
“Particularly with our agreement with the private developer on city property, there’s some income that will be coming into the city, but also the greening of our environment on a much larger scale than just the city,” Inman said.
Ameren Illinois will distribute the energy from the solar panels where it’s needed. They also are looking at adding solar panels on West Piper Street.
