Experts warn about freezing water pipes

The cold weather in the coming days could be bad news for your water pipes especially if they aren’t properly insulated.

Local experts said pipes in cabinets on the outer walls of homes and pipes running underneath homes with crawl spaces can be at risk for freezing.

Quincy Plumbing & Heating owner Ted Siebers said basic insulation can prevent most pipes from freezing, if there are low temperatures for just a day or two. For longer cold snaps, heating cables can be installed to keep pipes flowing– especially if those pipes run through crawl spaces

“But if it’s not skirted properly and there’s wind coming in, then usually if the pipe is running the length of the trailer and there’s not heat tape on it, then there’s going to be a problem,” said Siebers warning about at-risk pipes.

Siebers said for pipes in cabinets on the outer walls of homes, simply leaving the cabinet door open can get warm air around the pipes to prevent them from freezing.
