Canton, MO (WGEM) — Ice jams on the Mississippi river are leading to damage along the river.
An ice jam at Fenway Park landing North of Canton, Missouri, is damaging river camps and a parking area there.
Emergency management officials said ice jams restrict the flow of water on the river, meaning the ice is constantly being forced forward, pushing everything in it’s way.
“There’s a lot of force with that river, and pushing that much ice, and as thick as it is, it continues to build up, as it builds up, understand it’s got to move out,” said Marion County Emergency Management Director John Hark.
John Hark said he’s been talking with the army corps of engineers about how they’re dealing with the issue, he said they’re watching the situation closely and checking the thickness of the ice in places to keep track of it’s potential.
