Gov. Pritzker looks to legalize sports betting

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said he hopes sports gambling will help solve the state’s budget troubles. However, state lawmakers must first legalize it.

During his budget address last month, Pritzker said the state could make $200 million from the licensing fees to help fill the $3.2 billion budget hole.

Pritzker wants to create 20 licenses for in-person or online sports betting.

Illinois’ last major gambling expansion was in 2009. Gov. Pat Quinn authorized video gambling in places that serve liquor.
