Western Illinois men’s golf fielded two teams in the Benbow Invitational at Blue Sky Golf Club earlier today in Jacksonville, Florida.
The purple squad sits in fifth place with a combined team score of 301 through round one followed by the gold team in eighth (328).
“We had several solid rounds today,” interim head coach Lia Biehl Lukkarinen said. “If our putts start dropping, we can make some headway.”
Wyatt Spier led all Leatherneck golfers with a day one score of 73 (+1) while tied for seventh overall.
Also on Western’s purple team, Kyle Irlbacker fired a 75 (+3) and freshman Cameron Karney shot a 76 (+4).
Purple was rounded out by a pair of 77 scores (+5) from Jackson Wetherbee and John Duggan III.
Another freshman, Parker Govern paced the gold squad and is in a tie for 10th overall with a 74 (+2).
In his first action of the spring, Graham Conrad fired an 84 (+12) followed closely by fellow Macomb native Joe Burke with an 85 (+13).
Nick Ceruzzi also teed it up for the first time in 2019 turning in an 85 (+13) and Dennis Reedy finished with an opening round total of 88 (+16).
Host Butler (290) is currently leading Albany State (291) by one stroke in the team standings.
The Leathernecks have one more 18-hole round beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12 with a shotgun start.
