QUINCY (WGEM) — Pieces of Quincy history will be auctioned off Saturday, including four revolvers issued to the Quincy Police Department more than 140 years ago.
Will Sullivan is auctioning off the four 1877 Colt revolvers special ordered for QPD.
They are part of the original set of 24 guns bought in 1877. After doing the research, Sullivan says they were the only type 5 revolvers to leave the Colt factory with loading gates. He says they are extremely rare.
“This would have been a fairly big deal for 1877. This is something that maybe Chicago or New York would have done for their police department. A small town in Illinois, you know, probably not so much,” said Sullivan.
The Auction will take place at the Oakley Lindsay Center starting at 9 a.m. Sullivan estimates these revolvers will be auctioned around 10 or 10:30.
Sullivan said, “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for this area to get a little better picture of 1877 Quincy, Illinois.”
The revolvers and other auction items are on display Friday until 6 p.m.
