Western Illinois Women’s & Men’s Golf Teams Finish Up Strong On The Fairways In Georgia

Cassidy Jurkaites racked up a top-5 finish as the Western Illinois women’s golf team finished in third place with a combined team score of 330.

The Leathernecks were playing at the Savannah State Spring Fling at Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah, Georgia.

With a 79 (+7), Jurkaites wrapped up the one-day event tied for fifth place overall.

Fresh off her career outing on Tuesday, Mariah Peters fired an 81 (+9) in Savannah.

Adriana Garcia Martin landed in the starting lineup and shot an 84 (+12). Emily Marrs and Nicole Hamilton Cross both turned in scores of 86 (+14).

Senior Katie McTaggart led the Leatherneck individuals with a one-round score of 85 (+13). Freshman Abbie Gault turned in a tally of 92 (+20) and Katy Schmitt competed with a 94 (+22).

Butler won the event with a combined team score of 314.

On the men’s side, Kyle Irlbacker finished at the top of the leaderboard as Western Illinois men’s golf purple team tied for first in the five-team field Savannah State Spring Fling.

The event was held at the Crosswinds Golf Club. The gold squad wrapped up play in fourth place.

“The team finished spring break strong,” interim head coach Lia Biehl Lukkarinen said. “Great round on an unseen course.”

In the one-round event, Irlbacker shot a 71 (-1) for a co-medalist honor while Jackson Wetherbee cracked the top-5 with a 73 (+1) good enough for a fourth place tie.

Parker Govern and Wyatt Spier both concluded with a 77 (+5) while John Duggan III rounded out the purple team score at 80 (+8).

A 76 (+4) was the final score for Joe Burke after one round to pace the gold team.

Cameron Karney was next with a 77 (+5) followed by Graham Conrad (81), Nick Ceruzzi (83) and Dennis Reedy (88).

Western finished even with host Savannah State after both teams turned in a 298 combined team score.

Butler took third with a 299 followed by the WIU gold squad’s 317 and Earlham College finished in fifth (321).

The Leathernecks of Western will return to Illinois to play in the Bradley Intercollegiate March 30-31.
