Quincy Democrats pick up seats on city council

QUINCY (WGEM) — Both Katie Awerkamp and Benjamin Uzelac picked up wins for the democrats in Quincy’s 6th and 7th wards.

Uzelac beat multiple-term incumbent Terri Heineke while Awerkamp beat Josh Zanger.

At two different points Tuesday night, Awerkamp actually thought she had lost before finally finding out she came out on top.

Both Uzelac and Awerkamp will be first time aldermen.

Both said they have a lot of homework to do before they get sworn in to their positions but they say they are ready to get to work.

“I still have a lot to learn but I’m planning on sitting down with our mayor, our other aldermen, all of the city department heads and just kind of getting their thoughts on everything and going from there,” said Uzelac.

“I think it’s important to have a little bit of identity going into city council, knowing what our ward is needing right now. Knowing what they’ve voiced already,” said Awerkamp. “It’s going to help me make decisions moving forward and knowing that in the back of my head, it gives me a little insight going into city council.”

Notably, Awerkamp is now the only woman on the city council after Uzelac beat Heinecke and 5th ward’s Jennifer Lepper did not seek re-election.
