Bicycle Safety: Tips for drivers and riders

Ride safe and ride smart; those are words to live by for cyclists in the area who are just now getting back on their bikes after a long bout of cold weather.

Ryan Hildebrand with Madison & Davis Bicycle Shop in Quincy says drivers need to give cyclists at least three feet of room to maneuver.

According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, a total of 777 bicyclists were killed in crashes with vehicles in 2017.

Cyclists say the biggest thing they notice while out riding is drivers simply not paying attention.

“Everybody is using their cellphone and you can typically tell when you get passed closely, that they’re not even looking up.”

Hildebrand also encourages cyclists to make yourself as visible as possible by wearing bright colors and putting lights on either your bicycle or helmet.
