A dietitian with Hannibal Regional Hospital is weighing in on a the fad diet intermittent fasting.
Katie Foster, a registered dietitian, says intermittent fasting is when you go long periods of time without eating, sometimes up to 18-hours.
She says there are pros and cons to the diet and it’s not for everyone.
She says if you have blood pressure issues or diabetes, you should be extra cautious.
Foster says when you do eat after the fast, you have to make sure its quality food.
“Diet quality, by that I mean adequate protein intake to preserve lean muscle mass and also adequate fruit and vegetable intake to make sure you’re getting enough fiber so not just eating all of those foods that you really enjoy eating because you hadn’t had them in an extended period of time,” said Foster.
Foster says with any diet, if weight loss is the goal, it needs to be a maintainable weight loss
