PIKE, COUNTY, IL (WGEM) — All throughout the Tri-States sandbagging efforts were happening including in Pike County,Illinois.
Pike County Jail inmates were filling bags Friday afternoon near Atlas on U.S. 54, which is also closed to drivers due to flooding.
Volunteer Marcus Davis told WGEM News, he and other volunteers have been working for the past few days to help protect the area.
Volunteers were also sandbagging near Hull & Kinderhook in Pike County.
Sny Levee Island District Commissioner Dan Lundberg said there was a low spot in the levee, so they decided to fill the bags in the area to help keep water out.
“Our main concern is over topping, I mean on a sand levee, if it runs over you’ve lost the levee,” Lundberg said. “We end up with another 2 1/2 or 3 inches of rain like this last one, we could be in trouble.”
