Veterans prepared for the 53rd Great River Honor Flight Mission with a preflight meeting at Hannibal LaGrange University Sunday.
Out of the 30 veterans going, there is one woman. In fact, of the over 1,600 veterans who have taken the Great River Honor Fight, only 16 are women.
The woman on this trip is Cynthia Spees. She was a medic during the Vietnam War apart of the Women Army Corps. She said she has been waiting almost 2 years to head to the nation’s capital for this trip.
“I’m really excited that I finally get to go on it,” said Spees. “I’m looking forward to it, I’m kind of nervous and scared to it. I’m anxious to go, there’s a few names that I may know on the wall at Vietnam.”
The veterans will depart from H-L-G-U at 3 am on May 11th and return around 10 pm.
