Gov. Pritzker is tightening Scott’s Law

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said he wants to strengthen Scott’s Law, after new legislation was signed Tuesday.

Scott’s Law requires drivers to move over for any vehicle on the side of the road with hazard lights on.

The new legislation would increase fines for people who don’t move over, including a $750 fine for second offenders. Revenue from those fines would go toward the Scott’s Law fund.

Gov. Pritzker said distracted driving could cost someone their life.

“No driver needs to get to their destination so quickly that they need to put at risk the life of an emergency responder,” Pritzker said. “So slow down.”

Gov. Pritzker said he wants to create a task force to study Scott’s Law violation and why it keeps happening.
