Illinois bill would allow some SNAP recipients to use benefits at restaurants

SPRINGFIELD, IL (WGEM) — Individuals in Illinois who are elderly, have a disability, or are homeless may soon be able to redeem their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits at select restaurants.

The Restaurant Meals Program (HB3343) has been approved by the House and is waiting for Senate approval. The bill would allow benefit recipients with specific conditions to redeem SNAP vouchers at restaurants.

It is unclear which restaurants would participate or how they would be selected.

If approved, the bill would go into effect January 1, 2020.
