Fort Madison, IOWA (WGEM) – BNSF Railway announced it’s changing the way it collects tolls on the Fort Madison bridge this summer.
BNSF officials said the company will only collect tolls on drivers heading in to Fort Madison, instead of those heading out of the city. The changes will take place this summer in an effort to avoid traffic jams in Fort Madison.
The company will also install new automated toll payment machines which will accept both cash and credit cards. Company officials said this will allow the bridge operator to focus on coordinating rail and boat traffic.
Tolls will be a flat fee of $3 per vehicle. While BNSF officials said this will reduce cost for some vehicles, passenger vehicles will end up paying $1 more per vehicle.
