Western Illinois University President Jack Thomas is five days away from officially leaving his position and Tuesday, the university held a reception in his honor.
Alumni, current employees, community leaders and a former WIU president packed a room in the University Union for the celebration.
Speakers like Tom Oakley spoke about Thomas’s tenure as president and commended him for his work.
Thomas says he will miss the students the most when he leaves the position June 30th.
“We feel that the institution right now is poised for greatness,” Thomas said. “We’ve gone through a lot these past 8 years, unprecedented times with the budget impasse as well as decreased enrollment across the state and I feel this is the right time to step aside and move on.”
At the last Board of Trustees meeting, Thomas announced he would resign from his position as president after years of turmoil that included layoffs, declining enrollment and two years without funding from the state during a budget impasse.
