Man charged with murder in Mt. Sterling shooting

MT STERLING, IL (WGEM) — Court documents show that John Dean has been charged with First Degree Murder for the death of Rebecca Niewhoner.

Brown County State’s Attorney Mark Vincent stated that Dean committed the offense of First Degree Murder with the intent to kill Niewhoner by shooting her with a .45 caliber handgun.

On June 14, police responded to the call of a shooting in the 400 block of East Chestnut Street in Mt. Sterling.

Police found 44-year-old Rebecca Niewohner deceased and John Dean was suffering from what police say looked like a gunshot wound to the face.

Dean was transported to the Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville, Illinois, before being transferred to a hospital in Springfield , Illinois.
