The third-place Quincy Gems are in the mist of a playoff race right now in the Prospect League’s West Division.
The (17-15) Gems will face the second place DuPage Pistol Shrimp tonight at QU Stadium in the first of a 2-game weekend series.
A half game separates (17-14) DuPage and Quincy in the division standings where the (22-10) Cape Catfish remain in first place.
With the Pistol Shrimp in town, the Gems need Joey Polak’s big bat back in the line-up. That’s why last night at the ballpark he was informed he would be starting
once again tonight on the diamond with Quincy. Polak has been out of action after undergoing surgery on his tonsils.
Gems Manager Pat Robles had originally planned to start Polak next Tuesday (July 8), on the road, against Springfield. WGEM Sports reported the story on Friday.
With Cape Catfish, DuPage, and the (13-21) Normal Cornbelters all grouped together in the division standings, along with Quincy, the Gems need to focus on all the
match-up’s ahead that they have with those three teams. Record’s in head to head contests could very well wind up being a determining factor on what teams go to the
postseason, and which teams go home when the regular season comes to a close on August 6.
With that in mind, Robles stated earlier today that Polak will be re-inserted into the starting line-up tonight when the Gems host DuPage.
Polak will start and third base and bat third in the line-up.
According to Gems Manager Pat Robles, the Quincy Notre Dame product was alerted of the change in plans last night.
Quincy closed out their 4-game series against the Hoots on Friday night with an 11-8 victory.
Polak is currently batting (.407) after appearing in just 7 games with Quincy. During that time, the Missouri State product has posted 11 hits in 27 plate appearances.
The 6-foot-3, 215 pound infielder has 2 homers, 1 double, and 9 runs batted in heading into tonight’s game.
Polak last appeared in Gems game back on June 23 against the Springfield Sliders. During that 10-8 Quincy victory at QU Stadium, Polak went 2-for-5 at the plate.
Robles also is encouraging all Quincy area baseball fans to come out to the ballpark tonight, and cheer on the Gems as they open a very important 2-game series against
DuPage. The Pistol Shrimp beat Cape Catfish last night 10-9.
First pitch in the Gem City this evening is set for 7:05 p.m.
