Center, Missouri, police chief resigns

Center, Missouri, Police Chief David Ray resigned Wednesday night.

Ray confirmed his resignation to WGEM News during a brief phone call Thursday afternoon, but he would not discuss details.

Alderwoman Christy Browning says the city has agreed to a severance package with Ray.

This comes after recent turmoil within the city government. In June, the city council fired him at its monthly meeting, but Ray was reinstated a week later.

Ray’s wife and city clerk, Tracey Ray, was shot by Ralls County deputies July 2nd.  Investigators have released few details surrounding the shooting, including her current medical condition.

On July 3rd, Tracey Ray was fired and city leaders requested an audit from the state to look into questionable finances.

Also on July 3rd, David Ray was placed on administrative leave for two weeks because of the requested audit, according to Mayor Dennis McMillen.

Preliminary audit results revealed questionable finances under then city clerk Tracey Ray.on July 10, and a full audit was scheduled.
