New Illinois law helps QPS hire teachers during shortage

QUINCY (WGEM) — The state of Illinois continues to find ways to fight the teacher shortage.

Last week, Governor JB Pritzker signed a law eliminating a requirement for teacher candidates to pass basic skills test to get an educator license.

“The state for sure is looking for creative ways to get more teachers in the classroom, no doubt we have a teacher shortage across the nation this is not just a problem in Quincy, this is a national teacher shortage that we’re facing,” Otten said.

Otten added the district also has a teaching waiver from the state that allows them to work with candidates with a bachelor’s degree who want to become teachers.

QPS is recruiting teachers for the 2020-2021 school year, according to Otten.
