How to manage back-to-school anxiety and stress

From bullying to peer pressure, heading back to school can cause anxiety for some kids.

Therapists at Cornerstone Foundations for Families said heading back to school can create a lot of stress for students.

Therapist Kim Wheelock said it can be an adjustment period due to kids having a structured schedule again. She added that a busy schedule and trying to balance several clubs or sports can be difficult.

“For teenagers or a young child who is experiencing anxiety know that everyone experiences stress or anxiety at different times, working through that anxiety can really help them feel better and help them get through their day,” Wheelock said.

She added parents should talk to their kids, create a safe space for them to open up and acknowledge their feelings.

Finally, Wheelock said if that does not help and they are becoming more withdrawn, you may want to seek professional help.
