Deadly crash near Kinderhook

A single-vehicle crash resulted in a fatality Saturday evening near Kinderhook, Illinois.

The victim has been identified as 93-year-old Richard H. Schutte of New Canton, Illinois.

Pike County Sheriff David Greenwood said Schutte was driving a 2015 Ford northbound on State Highway 96 south of State Highway 106 when he veered off of the roadway and struck a Nicor gas line.

Citizens carried Schutte away from the gas line.

Greenwood said traffic was shut down for approximately two hours on both State Highway 96 and State Highway 106 while repairs were being made to the gas line.

Schutte was transported to St. Johns Hospital in Springfield where he succumbed to his injures.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Illinois State Police, Hull-Kinderhook Fire Department, New Canton Fire Department and the Pike County Ambulance Service.
