We now know more about where possible adult-use cannabis stores could go, if Quincy City Council chooses to allow those stores in city limits.

Herbal Remedies near 44th and Broadway just sells medical marijuana now but come January 1, when recreational marijuana will become legal statewide, Herbal Remedies is wanting to open up two additional marijuana shops, one of which would be at 4th and Maine.

At last week’s city council meeting, Green Thumb Industries out of Canton, Illinois talked to the aldermen, expressing their interest in opening up an adult-use cannabis shop within city limits.

At Monday’s meeting, officials with Herbal Remedies spoke out saying they should be given priority if the city allows the sale of recreation marijuana because they are a locally run business.

“Herbal Remedies is a small, privately held company owned by Bob Lansing and myself,” said Chris Wildrick. “We are both residents of Quincy. We live here. We dine here. We shop here. We buy our automobiles here. We pay real estate taxes that go to support the community.”

As of now, state statute says for medical marijuana sales stores have to be 1000 feet from a daycare or school. There is no state statute in regards to the setback for recreational marijuana sales. However, the Quincy Plan Commission recommends the setback be 100 feet from a daycare or school.

Monday was the second reading in regards to if the city will allow the sale of recreational marijuana and how much they want to tax on it, which can be as high as 3 percent. Next week will be the final reading where city council should make a decision.
