Local school tries to encourage reading to become habit

At a time when kids tend to always have a piece of technology in their hands, one Tri-State school is encouraging kids to have a book instead.

St. Francis Solanus School hosted ‘Family Read Night’ on Wednesday.

Several guests could be found in classrooms, reading to students.

Teachers say this event not only encourages kids, but families as well, to sit down and read.

“The younger grade levels lay the foundation for reading,” said St. Francis Solanus Teacher Julie Radel. “We are trying to get children excited about reading when they’re young so it becomes a habit when they are older.”

Since October is Fire Safety Month, Quincy firefighters were also on hand to let kids check out the fire truck and equipment.
