LOUISIANA, Mo. – None of the demolition of the Champ Clark Bridge would have happened without a lucky seventh grader setting it all off.
Mitchell Lemons, a 13-year-old from Pittsfield, Illinois, did the honors.
Lemons won the chance to push the button to set off the implosion.
He said he still remembers the moment he heard his name called after the drawing.
“They showed it to me and and when I saw it i was kind of shocked and I thought it was a joke at first because my dad’s friends play a lot of jokes on me,” Lemons said.
MoDOT allowed tickets to be sold for a chance to win the opportunity.
The Pittsfield High School history club sold tickets to raise money to support their club.
The Louisiana Chamber of Commerce raised money for local first responders.
