Quincy teen dies after driving into pond

SHERMAN, IL (WGEM) — A Quincy teenager died Sunday after her vehicle plunged into a pond at a Sherman, Illinois, golf course, the Sangamon County Coroner said.

Coroner Cinda Edwards said Tuesday that Kaylee Mehochko, 16, of Quincy was recovered from a sunken vehicle by Springfield Fire Department divers.

Edwards said CPR was started at the scene and Mehochko was taken to Memorial Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Edwards said the cause of death was drowning.

Illinois State Police said the crash happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Edwards said Mehochko was the driver of the vehicle. She said a passenger was able to exit and swim to safety. ISP said the passenger had non-life threatening injuries.

The Sherman Police Department and the Illinois State Police are both investigating the incident.
