JWCC students learn cultural differences

Students at John Wood Community College are learning about cultural differences between America and the Netherlands.

Silke Heerts, a sports psychologist and former professional European Basketball Player from the Netherlands spent the Monday speaking to students.

The class discussed hot topics like gun control, poverty and food habits in both countries. Heerts said the John Wood women’s basketball coach tried to recruit her back when she was 17 years old.

Although she chose to play basketball in the Netherlands, she stays in touch and enjoys coming to America to educate students.

“I went to psychology and sociology [classes] and the students asked me a lot of questions,” Heerts said. “The questions are a lot of the differences between America and the Netherlands, so it was very interesting.”

Over the past 10 days, Heerts was able to watch and work with the JWCC women’s basketball team as well.

She will return to the Netherlands Tuesday and said she hopes to come back next year.
