Schuyler County church catches fire

UPDATE: The Illinois Fire Marshal concluded Friday afternoon that the cause of the fire is undetermined, according to Rushville Fire Chief Vic Menely.

CAMDEN, IL (WGEM) — Smoke was seen rolling out of the Camden United Methodist Church Thursday night as crews battled a fire.

Camden is Schuyler County, about 11 miles north of Mt. Sterling, Illinois.

The Schuyler County Fire Chief said crews arrived on scene at 3:30 p.m. and saw heavy black smoke rising from the roof.

Fire officials said crews  were still battling the fire hours later.

Firefighters had to put holes in the roof of the church to combat the fire.

Residents on the scene told WGEM News that no one was in the church when the fire started, but emergency officials have not confirmed that.

It’s not clear what caused the fire however the fire chief said their was some construction going on earlier in the day.

Residents who said they had gone to the church their entire life were also on the scene to support firefighters with hot chocolate and snacks.

The Schuyler County sheriff said Rushville and Beardstown fire fighters responded along with Schuyler County Firefighters.
