Cause of Camden church fire may never be known

CAMDEN, IL (WGEM) — The cause of a fire that damaged a church in Camden, Illinois, Thursday is undetermined at this time.

The Illinois Fire Marshal concluded Friday the cause of the fire at the Camden United Methodist Church is undetermined, according to Rushville Fire Chief Vic Menely.

Menely said he believes the fire started around the entrance and in the foyer but does not know the exact origin.

Menely said there was construction being done to the front steps of the church but the Fire Marshal ruled out the possibility that it may have been the cause.

The Schuyler County Fire Chief said crews arrived on scene at 3:30 p.m. and saw heavy black smoke rising from the roof.

Fire officials said crews battled the fire for several hours..

Residents on the scene told WGEM News that no one was in the church when the fire started.

Residents who said they had gone to the church their entire life were also on the scene to support firefighters with hot chocolate and snacks.
