Plans for what city leaders call a modernization of Illinois 57 are moving a step forward.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is now hiring a consulting firm to do a planning and feasibility study to look at improvements on Illinois 57 which will extend from 72 North to Broadway.
City Planner Chuck Bevelheimer says the plans could include adding lanes, making a bypass around Marblehead and raising the pavement at Marblehead.
But, Bevelheimer says the fact that IDOT is responding means they’re listening to what the city wants to do.
“I think it’s good to see IDOT responding to that push with an evaluation of Illinois 57 because all the variables that are at play here need to be evaluated as they move forward with hopefully improvement and budgeting for those improvements,” he said.
Once IDOT hires a consulting firm, the firm has 24 months to complete the study.
