FORT MADISON, Ia. – A Fort Madison group is working to make the community more exercise friendly by adding walking trails around town.
The Promoting Outdoor Recreational Trails group held its third annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Fun Run Sunday morning.
Organizers said all the proceeds from the walk and run will go towards phase three of the walking trail project, which will connect the Baxter Sports Complex and the Fort Madison Community Hospital.
“It’s very good for economic growth because a lot of companies, like the hospital, in a lot of the physician recruitment, they’re looking for that type of thing, where you have recreational activities available,” PORT committee member Angie Budmik said. “Obviously we think it’s a really good way to get people out walking and running. We see a lot of families using the trail which is awesome.”
Organizers said PORT has already added nearly 6,000 feet of walking trails around Fort Madison.
