QUINCY (WGEM) — Local School Mascots are taking over ringing the bells at Salvation Army Red Kettles this week.

Monday Night, the Quincy Public School Blue Devil and QHS cheerleaders kicked off the Captain Kettle Mascot Challenge.

Other schools like John Wood, Quincy University, Quincy Notre Dame, and Culver Stockton will also have mascots ring the bell this week.

The goal is to out-ring the Salvation Army's mascot, Captain Kettle.

"It's a great way to give back to the community even though it's a little chilly inside. It's worth it," said James Henninger who wears the Quincy Blue Devil costume.

"It think it's really special and important this holiday season that we're giving back and not just with money but with our time and really going out of our way to be intentional this holiday season," said QHS Cheerleader Megan Sohn.

The winners will be announced next week.

That's when the Salvation Army and WGEM kick off the Bucket Blitz which goes from Monday through Thursday at the Quincy Mall from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

This year's goal in Quincy is $30,000.
