Fort officials looking to raise money for improvements

Officials from Fort Madison's old fort said they're looking to raise $10,000 for new volunteer uniforms, weapons and more.

They said most of their current equipment is almost 20 years and that their age is starting to show.

"Things have just begun to wear out," Old Fort Madison Site Director Eugene Watkins said. "When I get to the point that visitors believe the items are original, I have to say they're getting a bit worn out."

Officials said they're specifically looking for replacement firearms and uniforms for volunteers re-enacting the fort's role in the war of 1812.

"And of course all them items have to be specially ordered," North Lee County Historical Society president Andy Andrews said. "You know you can't go into a Walmart and buy uniforms from 1812 right off the shelf."

Watkins said they've raised roughly $7,600 so far.

Andrews said those looking to donate can drop their donation off at the Historical Society Museum on Avenue H.
